Telemedicine- Dermatology
Dermatology is the branch of medicine which deals with the skin and its appendages (hair, sweat glands, etc). The word dermatology comes from the Greek roots δερμα meaning skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body and the most visible. Although many skin diseases are isolated, some are manifestations of internal disease. Dermatologists are physicians (Medical Doctors) specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and tumors of the skin and its appendages. A dermatologist has had additional training and experience in the following:
  • The diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, melanomas, moles, and other tumors of the skin.
  • The management of contact dermatitis and other inflammatory skin disorders.
  • The recognition of the skin manifestations of systemic and infectious diseases.
  • Dermatopathology.
  • Surgical techniques used in dermatology.
  • Dermatologists also manage cosmetic disorders of the skin, including hair loss, scars, and the skin changes associated with aging.
Three types of dermatologists:
  • Dermatopathologist
  • Pediatric dermatologist
  • Immunodermatologist
Dermatopathologist is an expert in interpreting tissue under the microscopic diagnosis of diseases of the skin, including infectious, immunologic, degenerative, and neoplastic diseases. Pediatric dermatologist is specialized in the diagnoses and treatment of skin disease in children. Immunodermatologist is the one who is specialized in the diagnosis and management of skin diseases driven by an altered immune system. In addition, there is a wide range of congenital syndromes managed by dermatologists.

Four types of dermatology:
  • Common dermatology: recognizing and treatment of skin diseases.
  • Phlebology or Sclerotherapy: recognizing and treatment of spider veins and skin problems that are caused by a loss of blood stimulation in the legs.
  • Dermatologic surgery: surgery of malignant and benign skin cancers.
  • Venereology: Venereology is a branch of medicine dealing with the study and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. It includes the study of HIV infection.
Common form of Skin Disorders
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Vitiligo

Dermatitis is a general term used to describe inflammation of the skin. Most types of dermatitis are characterized by a pink or red rash that itches. These are allergic reactions caused by the body’s immune system. Psoriasis is a chronic (long-lasting), non-contagious disease characterized by open sores in the skin that become covered with silvery-white scabs. These disorders are caused by stress, infection, illness, cold temperature, steroids etc. Vitiligo is a condition in which smooth, white patches develop on the skin. It is caused when melanocytes die off. Melanocytes are skin cells that give skin their color. This condition is usually triggered by some stressful event such as an accident, job loss, severe sun burn, or serious illness.
